They provide individual with the neurological foundation to process sensory input, program and control motor and behavioral actions, enhance memory and learning, and develop appropriate language and communication skills.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Muscular Disharmony and its Effects <\/b><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Lack of muscle tone regulation beginning in infancy results in impulsive reactions that often turn into permanent behaviors as the child grows older. Impulsivity leads to lack of goal orientation and inner control, hyperactivity, chaotic and disorganised behaviour, inability to focus or follow instructions, impatience and irritability.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Poor muscle tone regulation is caused by a lack of integration in the excitation and inhibition processes in the reflex circuits.\u00a0A deficit in muscle tone regulation expose the child to a wide variety of health challenges including but not limited to the following:<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8211;\u00a0<b>High<\/b>\u00a0muscles tone at the back of the body along the spinal column\u00a0results in\u00a0<b>forward leaning<\/b>\u00a0with\u00a0<b>head turning down<\/b>, together with<b>\u00a0low<\/b>\u00a0abdominal muscle tone and diaphragm, all affect\u00a0<b>postural control<\/b>. In an effort to release tension, your child may display\u00a0<b>impulsive movements\u00a0<\/b>involving balance mechanisms.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8211;\u00a0<b>Low<\/b>\u00a0muscles tone at\u00a0arm, back of neck, palms and finger create a tendency for the child to keep\u00a0<b>arms flexed<\/b>, results in\u00a0<b>poor dexterity<\/b>.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8211;\u00a0<b>High<\/b>\u00a0leg muscles tone results in\u00a0<b>toe walking<\/b>,\u00a0<b>frequent running\u00a0<\/b>and\u00a0<b>jumping<\/b>.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8211;\u00a0<b>Low<\/b>\u00a0tone in oral-facial muscles leads to\u00a0<b>jaw tightening<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0<b>decreased mobility<\/b>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><ul><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Increases tendency for\u00a0<b>hyperventilation<\/b>, incomplete, rapid and shallow breathing, and holding breath during times of stress. The tendency for hyperventilation in individuals with\u00a0<b>chronic diseases<\/b>\u00a0is 4 to 7 times higher than the general population.\u00a0<br \/><\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8211;\u00a0imbalance in postural control\u00a0can result in growth factor hormone deficit, leading to\u00a0slow overall growth, and can affect\u00a0intellectual development\u00a0when the child does not notice the importance of external stimuli and escapes into their own world, thus being caught in a cycle of repetition of same stimuli over and over.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Righting Reactions<\/b><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Righting reactions provide integrated movement between the head and trunk, and the body and gravity. They are under control at the mid-brain level and have to do with the relationship to gravity and the relationships between body segments. They underlie one\u2019s ability to orient to the environment and to own body.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">2 general categories of Righting Reactions:<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Bringing the <b>head into upright <\/b>or vertical orientation in space in relationship to gravity<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Bringing the <b>head and trunk<\/b> into <b>mutual alignment<\/b> with each other<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 17px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 500;\">Righting Reactions<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0underlie movement transitions from <b>lying to upright<\/b> and <b>turning in relationship to gravity and space<\/b>. They are required for head lifting, rolling, sitting, crawling, creeping, standing, walking, running, etc., and maintaining postural alignment or tone. They are automatic reactions to a rapid loss of balance and weight shifting.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Gravity center shifts disproportionately from the back to the front, making the child incapable of maintaining normal balance. In order to compensate, the brain sends an order to tighten and\/or lock the tendons in order to maintain a standing position. This posture then over-activates the defensive reactions of fight or flight.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Equilibrium Responses<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Equilibrium Responses begins to develop the ability to transition <b>from a horizontal position to vertical or sitting<\/b>. They are automatic, varied patterns of movement to maintain balance by <b>shifting the center of weight<\/b> and\/or <b>base of support<\/b>. They are elicited by:<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Internal change of movement, such as <b>shifting weight from one leg to another<\/b> while climbing up a flight of stairs<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">External change or movement of support, such as when a <b>rolling stool being pushed<\/b> by a toddler rolls faster than she can ambulate.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 17px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 500;\">Equilibrium Responses<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0underlie and allow or support <b>turning of the body through space<\/b> and the ability to have a <b>multidirectional relationship with gravity<\/b>. They are mediated by higher brain centers, integrative centers such as the <b>cerebellum<\/b>, and they coordinate with, or are supported by integrated Primitive Reflex and Righting Reactions.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"font-size: 17px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 500; caret-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.6); text-size-adjust: auto;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold; color: #000000;\">What is Tonic Labyrinthine Reflex<\/span><\/p><p style=\"font-size: 17px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 500; caret-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.6); text-size-adjust: auto;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Tonic labyrinthine reflex can be inhibited if the Landau reflex is retained, leading to lower limb movement difficulty particularly into flexion, may walk in stiff and awkward manner, have difficulty in jumping and hopping.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"font-size: 17px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 500; caret-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.6); text-size-adjust: auto;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">1. arms and legs muscles have not been properly developed, leading to uncoordinated movements.
